Upper Gridiron Shelter | Kahurangi National Park
Upper Gridiron Shelter is a unique place of accommodation. How many other huts have one wall of solid rock on a 60º angle, seemingly hand-hewn by some novice sculptor who hasn’t quite got the art of fine finishing of the material totally sorted? With chisel marks still in evidence?
Outside, there’s a handsome, comfy sofa, yes, hanging on chains, all well sheltered.
Those with some experience of earthquakes might prefer an alternative accommodation.
