Mokihinui Forks Hut | Mohikinui Forks Ecological Area
Mokihinui Forks Hut is located on a river terrace overlooking a grassy expanse near the junction of the two Mokihinui River branches, and made famous by the recent removal of an enormous “500-year-old” kahikatea tree. There’s lots of firewood in the woodshed.
Taxpayers paid for the original NZFS hut, and the later extension and renovation. A short time ago this was a $5 hut, now you pay $20 for the privilege of booking.
I might mention that for some reason this hut is still covered by the Backcountry Hut Pass, ie, you don’t pay extra if you have a pass. Maybe that is why they call it a eight bunk hut even though there is room for 10 people.
Dunno, I don’t like the privatisation of DOC facilities.
